Vij's - Vancouver, BC
I love Indian food, the flavors are so comforting and appealing to me. In researching where to eat in Vancouver, I mostly was looking for Chinese, but came across Vij's, which some people said was overrated and other people said was great. So I was intrigued and I decided it was worth a try, and Thanksgiving night after arriving in Vancouver we headed there for dinner.
They don't take reservations, and although we arrived relatively early at 6:00pm, there was already a wait. So we hung out in the bar, pondering the fun ceiling, and watching the bustling kitchen through the window. I ordered a Singapore Sling and took advantage of the free bar snacks that were being occasionally passed around.
After about 45 minutes we were seated and I could see why we had to wait as the dining room is not large. It was also really dimly lit. We ordered the potatoes and green bean appetizer, which came with naan.
All the entrees have a small plate option, so we could order more. Our first selection was the wine marinated lamb popsicles, over fenugreek creamed curry with turmeric potatoes, which the signature dish and was tasty.
Next up, goat curry, because goat is fabulous and rare to see on restaurant menus.
For a veggie option, we tried the saag paneer with Punjabi daal. It was pretty spinachy, but a nice combination with the daal.
The meal was served with the longest long grain rice I have every seen and more naan.
And a donut in cardamom syrup for dessert. A small sweet ending to a great meal.
