Where to eat in San Mateo, CA
I only spent one night in San Mateo, but it seemed like a pleasant place with a bustling downtown and some good eating options.
Wursthall is a German beer hall with lots of sausage and beer. We weren’t super hungry, so we just ordered the Currywurst with crispy potatoes. The potatoes were super crispy and the sausage with curry sauce was tasty.
For breakfast, I can’t turn down a good looking bakery, and Backhaus was perfect. There was a line out the door that moved pretty quickly, and the bread looked fabulous, when I finally got in the door. But I was there for the pastries. There were too many options, but I settled on a morning bun coated in cinnamon sugar, a pain au chocolat, and a mixed berry crostock, which was a slice of brioche topped with berries and an oat crumble (really tasty!). There is a pleasant courtyard in the back to sit in and enjoy coffee and pastries after enduring the line.
