Wandering around the Presidio - San Francisco

Wandering around the Presidio - San Francisco

The Presidio of San Francisco is really massive and a great place to spend an afternoon. I’ve made numerous trips to San Francisco, but somehow never to the Presidio, until now.

The Main Post area is a good place to start, it has a big visitor parking lot and a huge lawn to lounge on. There are several museums right there - The Walt Disney Family Museum, National Park Service Visitor’s Center, and the Presidio Officer’s Club. If you’re looking for a place to say, the Inn at the Presidio is right next door to the Officer’s Club. And Arguello, a great option for lunch with tasty mexican food, is in the Officer’s Club if you happen to need lunch.

There are four different art installations by Andy Goldsworthy, Tree Fall which is in a little building in the parking lot by the Main Post Lawn, was very cool with dried mud texture and was the most interesting to me. And Wood Line, in the southeast corner near Lover’s Lane, was fun, because it was in the middle of a eucalyptus forest.

There are lots of other things to explore, beaches, winding roads, a cemetery, among other things along with excellent views of The Golden Gate Bridge.

For the best views, head to Fort Point National Historic Site at the northern tip of The Presidio. It’s basically underneath the bridge. There’s also an old fort there to wander and explore.
