Good eating in NYC - August 2019
Some recent eating adventures on a summer weekend in NYC.
Scarr’s Pizza was so good! I want to go back as soon as possible. It’s an unremarkable looking pizza shop on the lower east side. We arrived at dinner time and there was a short line, but it didn't take too long. They were making pizzas as fast as they could and then handing out slices as soon as the pizzas were out of the oven. We didn’t have a choice in toppings, just happily accepted whatever came out of the oven. The first slice was mushroom, one of my favorites! immediately wanted another slice, so we stood in the growing line for round 2.
Ess-a-bagel was an epic line adventure. I would recommend going really early or not in the summer. I think we managed to arrive at the busiest time of the morning and expected a line, but not quite the epic line that we experienced. It was down the street and then winding through the interior also, but it was hard to tell at first how long it was. If you just want bagels and cream cheese to go, there is a to go counter inside and makes it possible to avoid the line altogether. They have a huge selection of bagels, cream cheese, and bagel sandwiches, including pizza bagels, which I don’t see everyday. I had plenty of time to decide what to order, and settled on lox cream cheese with tomato. The bagels are huge and chewy, enjoyable, but I’m not sure it was worth the wait
Superiority Burger is a tiny place in the East Village and it’s a great place place for fast vegetarian. There’s almost no room to sit inside, so we ended up getting our food to go and sitting outside on a planter box on the street, which worked okay for the summer. Their signature plant based burger has a soft texture and is loaded with lettuce, tomatoes, pickle, and cheese. There are also a couple salad to go along, burnt broccoli or leafy greens as well as some seasonal options. I didn’t try the gelato, but I hear it’s very good.
