Natchez, MS

Natchez, MS

Natchez, Mississippi is a beautiful and weird place. I was intrigued by the history, and it’s a grand city right on the Mississippi River, but to us it felt a bit soul-less, it did not feel like people really lived there. To reinforce that, the owners of our Airbnb were only part-time residents.

It’s a conveniently walkable city, excellent for wandering around the pretty streets. Although there was also some slight weirdness after seeing two women out on walks carrying clubs in the evening, however we had no issues during our walks.

And if you’ve ever desired to own a semi-affordable Victorian mansion, keep Natchez in mind.

It seemed that the thing to do, and what most people were there for, is to tour the mansions on a Pilgrimage tour. In the spring and fall, there are deals and you can tour of number of houses on a multi-day package tour. However, we did not go this route, given that we were working during the day and chose to look from the outside while wandering around.

Natchez National Historical Park preserves the Melrose estate. Despite the house being closed, we were able to wander the grounds and admire from the outside.

Another interesting place to wander around is the cemetery.

For food, I can recommend Fat Mama’s Tamales, where we thoroughly enjoyed the frozen margaritas, gringo pie, and taco soup.
