A visit to the New England Aquarium
I’ve loved aquariums since I was a kid, and I’m pretty sure the New England Aquarium was the first aquarium I ever visited.
We were fortunate to be able to go on a weekday morning in mid-December, so it wasn’t too crowded, except for some school groups. It can get quite crowded on the weekends and in the summer and the parking garage is quite expensive. Although, there are some other lots and garages not too far away that are more affordable, if you’re willing to do a little searching.
Walking up to the aquarium entrance, the sea lion was getting a morning tooth cleaning.
The aquarium is not huge, but there is plenty to see. It is set up with a huge circular tank in the center, with smaller tanks around the outside and some other exhibits including a touch tank and outdoor area.
The touch tank is a good place to start. There are some really huge rays, that might come close if you are calm and quiet.
There are penguins around the outside of the large central tank.
The only decision is which walkway to follow. There is one around the central tank and one around the outside and it works well to go up one and then down the other.
The top is open and you can peer in.
And if you are in need of lunch afterward, Legal Sea Foods at Longs Wharf is just across the street and makes a convenient stop.
