Dirt Candy - NYC
I was really excited to eat at Dirt Candy, on the Lower East Side, every time I have heard about their food, it sounded so interesting. It’s all vegetarian, so of course I had to start with a pea and gin cocktail.
For dinner, the option is between the Veggie Patch (5 courses) or the Veggie Garden (about 10 courses). We went with the Vegetable Garden, deciding to try everything possible and definitely did not leave hungry.
I have to say, I don’t usually get very opinionated about service, as long as I don’t feel like I’ve been forgotten, but here, we did not experience the best service. Our server reeled off each dish so quickly, that I couldn’t even absorb everything she was telling me before she was walking away, so I’ve lost some of the details.
The first course was this fun three-tiered tower, with green gazpacho, breadsticks with cheese, and veggie mousses.
Monkey bread with saffron was so pretty and served warm from the oven.
Next was korean fried broccoli and bok choy with a dipping sauce.
This tomato plate was so pretty, tomato bread, topped with tomatoes, wrapped with tomato leather.
I discovered mushrooms and peaches go very nicely together.
Asian long beans wrapped on skewers.
Carrot burgers in a very cute burger box.
Cauliflower in broth, super simple, but super flavorful. And huitlocoche ravioli, were okay, but I’ve never had huitlocoche (corn fungus) before, so that was fun.
The last savory course was snap pea as pekin duck, complete with a grill. Quite fun to grill the peas and then wrap them up.
And dessert, it was too much fun to watch the chocolate mushroom melt away, I don’t evn remember what was inside, but it was yummy.
And to end the meal, cooked table side, eggplant foster, a fun take on bananas foster. There was no mistaking the eggplant for banana, but it was tasty none the less.
