Eight Days in Scotland - Day 3 Mull and Iona
We spent our day on Mull driving pretty much the entire perimeter. Starting in Tobermory, we drove southeast to Craignure and then west to Fionnphort.
Driving on Mull and some of the other islands in Scotland, is a bit different, the roads are narrow in many places anyway, but most of these roads are single-track with regularly placed pull-offs. It mostly worked okay, but it's startling when a big truck or bus or really anything was coming directly at us.
The scenery is pretty spectacular - both coastal and interior mountains.
Arriving in Fionnphort, we bought our ferry tickets to Iona, but then had to wait for the next ferry, so we explored the lovely little white sand beach next to the terminal.
The crossing to Iona is just about 10 minutes, and although the ferry does have room for a few cars by special appointment, it is generally walk-on only.
After getting off the ferry, it's a short walk to Iona Abbey. On the way, there's a ruined Nunnery to explore and an ancient cross that marked the way to the Abbey for pilgrims. Iona Abbey was a destination for pilgrims beginning around 560 AD. It's also possibly where the book of Kells was written in 800 AD. And there's a cemetery next to the Abbey where the actual MacBeth is buried. It's a pretty historical place.
After a couple hours on Iona, we took the ferry back to Mull and continued east and north on our tour of the island. The roads got narrower and windier, if that's possible. There was lots more to see including a herd of sheep blocking the road and beautiful Calgary beach.
