Red Rooster Harlem
My Mom, Dad, and I spent 2 nights in Harlem and Red Rooster was just 2 blocks away, so we went there for dinner on our first night. It was a miserable rainy evening and I made an early reservation, so that we wouldn't be late to La Boheme at The Met. So we arrived at 4:30pm and we were the only ones there for about 45 minutes. But it allowed us to be pretty relaxed and take our time, so it worked out just fine.
First up, drinks: I ordered the Uptown Girl #2 with sparkling wine, scotch, cinnamon, apple, and citrus. I love bubbles and fruity drinks, but I don't usually like scotch/bourbon, but I didn't really get much scotch, so this was a great choice. My Mom had a Negroni and my Dad had a glass of wine.
We ordered a couple appetizers: the deviled eggs
and the fried green tomatoes with frisee and peaches.
I ordered the Fried Yardbird, which came with white gravy, mashed potatoes, collards, and bread and butter pickles. I have to say the thing I like most on the plate, was the mashed potatoes. The fried chicken was pretty good, but not the best ever. I did like that it was dark meat served on the bone and it was tender and juicy. The greens were very tender and potatoes were super yummy and creamy.
Dessert was disappointing. Not really wanting anything large, we picked the item that was described as truffles and macarons. We only got truffles. I noticed that shortly afterward, they changed their menu to just truffles, but it was a let down at the end of the meal.
Otherwise, it was an enjoyable meal. I would definitely go back, the menu has a really interesting combination of Southern with a little Swedish and a little Ethiopian, and that is pretty unusual.
