A morning at Franklin Barbecue
In May, we traveled to Austin for a long weekend. We were arriving on Saturday afternoon, which left me with the options of Sunday or Tuesday for lunch at Franklin Barbecue. I was pretty sure that I did not want to go on the weekend. Our flight out was on Tuesday afternoon, so I figured Tuesday morning was the best day to try waiting in line. Not knowing what to expect, I arrived a little after 8:00am with my chair and a book, and found about 15-20 people in line already. After I arrived, people continued to flow in with chairs and beer and the line got pretty long, stretching across the parking lot. If you didn't bring your own chairs or beer, there apparently was a CVS around the block that would be happy to supply you.
After awhile, staff started showing up to direct the line and take estimated orders and let us know what time to expect to be at the counter. At 10:30, they had us put away the chairs and line-up. And at 11:00, they opened the doors and people started ordering.
When we finally got to the front, we ordered brisket, turkey, pulled pork (all by the pound), and coleslaw. Everything was super tender and tasty. I am a huge fan of pulled pork and I think it was probably the best I've had.
Overall, it was an entertaining experience, but I probably wouldn't do it again, at least for awhile.
