DTLA
LA is massive and I’d never spent any time in downtown LA, so on our recent trip to LA, we spent the first day walking around the downtown.
First stop after landing at LAX, Grand Central Market and breakfast. We conveniently parked our car in the garage at the market and left it there for the day. On this day, I went specifically for Eggslut, but the market was a pretty fun place and is definitely worth another visit for more exploration. Eggslut makes a very nice breakfast sandwich with a soft brioche bun, which I think is key to a great breakfast sandwich, along with bacon, egg, cheese, and ketchup which was a slightly surprising flavor. And then hash browns as a side of course.
Blue Bottle Coffee was right across the street, which also happened to be in the Bradbury Building. The historic building was built in 1893 and was a filming location for Bladerunner. It would be totally fun to wander around all the staircases, but only the lobby is accessible.
There are a couple art museums in DTLA, but I was interested in the The Broad because they had a Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrors installation (advance reservation required). It’s by timed ticket only and you can only go in for a couple minutes.
After we had our time with the infinity mirrors, we explored the rest of the museum, which had some fun art pieces.
From The Broad we walked a couple blocks north to Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral, it has interesting modern architecture and angels everywhere.
Olvera street is pretty touristy, but still fun to wander through. At the end we stood in line at Cielito Lindo for the famous taquitos.
The Chinatown District starts across the street where Olvera Street ends, so we walked through on our way to Los Angeles State Historic Park.
The park had a nice view and a lot of green space, but there wasn’t much there otherwise. So we walked to the end and then decided it was a good time to stop for a drink at Highland Park Brewery and that was the end of our DTLA walk.
