Oklahoma City
We stopped in Oklahoma City for two nights on our way to Tennessee, and since we were working during the day that we were there, this was not the trip to OKC that I had originally envisioned, but we made the most of our time.
Most importantly, some food first. Bright and early Friday morning, I placed a take-out order at Waffle Champion. I was debating between biscuits and waffles, and I’ll need to go back for Honey Bunny Biscuit sometime. Waffle Champion has just about every waffle-y sort of thing you can imagine and I am very fond of waffles, so that won over. I ordered the Avocado Toast on a Liege style waffle with egg, avocado, radishes, and pickled onions. It was a little heavy on the pickled onions for me, but otherwise, I enjoyed it.
If you are really hungry, Leo’s BBQ will fill you up. I believe we ordered the Super Leo’s Special and it was a very generous portion for 2 people of ribs, brisket, sausage, and bologna along with sides and cake. The bologna also made some excellent fried rice later on.
After working all day, we took a walk in downtown OKC in the afternoon. Starting at Myriad Botanical Gardens, which is a small pretty garden, right in the Business District. There is also a Conservatory which is accessible during the day with a ticket.
Bricktown is a just a couple blocks to the east from the garden.
There’s a canal, which is nice to walk along. And a number of restaurants and bars in the area.
Just before the underpass at I-40, is the rather dramatic Centennial Land Run Monument.
The next morning, before we continued heading east, we stopped at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum to explore. The museum is very well done and informative.
