NPS Sites of the East Bay Area - part 1
Here's an interesting way to spend two days in the East Bay area. There are four National Park Sites within easy driving distance of each other - two require tours with reservations and two can be visited anytime, so it does take a little advance planning. And two of these are in the top ten of least visited NPS, so they aren't too crowded.
John Muir NHS in Martinez doesn't require a tour, so it's easy to stop in anytime.
Port Chicago Naval Magazine NM is probably the most difficult to visit and therefore is one of the least visited National Park Sites in the US. It is on an active military base, and the tour leaves from John Muir NHS, but only goes 3 days a week and can be canceled last minute due to military base activity.
Eugene O'Neill NHS in Danville is accessible by guided or self-guided tours, but you can't drive there, you must take the shuttle from downtown Danville.
Rosie the Riveter NHS in Richmond is in an industrial area near the water with nice views across the bay and doesn't require a tour.
For my two days visiting these sites, I scheduled it so that we were at John Muir late morning on a Saturday and then caught the 12:45pm tour to Port Chicago and had dinner in Berkeley. We stayed near Danville and took the 10:00am tour on Sunday to Eugene O'Neill and then finished the weekend at Rosie the Riveter.
